Artist Statement

I created these pieces to represent several personal facets; an academic side, a more imaginative side, and a cultural side. The first is embodied in my geometric works, produced either digitally or in pencil. The second is portrayed in the ink landscapes, which are all imaginary scenes. I love the range of value and texture that can be created through the pen/ink medium. Lastly, the third is represented by the pastel portraits of some of my favorite 20th-century musicians. Unknowingly, I began this series last year with a portrait of John Coltrane. Upon detailing my plan for this year, I decided to expand on that work with similar portraits of other artists.

Hendrik Younger is a Junior at Renaissance High School. He is a Charlottesville native with strong interests in Math, Science, and Economics. Additionally, he plays alto saxophone and viola and has performed at locations around town multiple times. His love of the structure of subjects like math is reflected in his many designs based on the geometry of circles and polygons, where simply selecting a pattern of connecting points and iterating it around the shape can create fascinating motifs. However, he supplements these geometric works with more freeform works, notably pastel portraits of musicians he enjoys listening to and landscapes in ink. The portraits are a continuation of a similar project in Studio Art, and the landscapes are an extension of one of his favorite types of drawing.
