Mercedes Goering

Artist Statement

Mercedes delved into the world of oil and acrylic paints this year in Portfolio 2. She began experimenting with following along with episodes of Bob Ross’s series Beauty is Everywhere, Chill With Bob Ross, and The Joy of Painting using oil paints on two by two-inch canvases. She was inspired by her love of the Blue Ridge Mountains and natural beauty. Her oil paintings generally focus on the beauty of fall and winter mountain scenes. Her acrylic paintings center around abstract interpretations of real-life events and experiences.

Mercedes Goering was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lived in Oberlin, Ohio and Chapel Hill, North Carolina before moving to Charlottesville, Virginia in 2007. Upon starting elementary school she became interested in the arts, including studio art and music. Throughout middle and high school she continued to further her art education by taking music and art classes for most of her academic career.

She enjoys spending time outside with her family and going on hikes, as well as listening to and playing music, and watching Netflix. She dabbles in different media including acrylic paints, oil paints, watercolor, photography, pencils, and pens. She is captivated by the alla prima work of Bob Ross. Her goal in Portfolio 2 was to explore color theory and light through nature scenes on a miniscule scale as well as working with acrylics on canvas to create abstract pieces. She will most likely be attending the University of Virginia in the fall to study biology.
